This article is designed to help when the LED on an ESC is flashing red and green.
If the Low-Voltage Detection (LVD) is "ON" when a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is used an ESC may show the over-voltage alarm, indicated by a flashing red and green light. When using a NiMH battery in your Traxxas vehicle, it is important that the LVD remains "OFF". Here are two ways to remedy this.
If you have a Lithium Polymer (LiPo) battery, connect it to the ESC and turn it on. The light on the ESC should be steady green, indicating the LVD is "ON". Then you can simply switch the LVD to "OFF" by holding the EZ-Set button until the light switches to red.
If you do not have a LiPo battery, then follow the procedure below to switch the LVD to "OFF".
1. Turn the transmitter "ON".
2. Plug a fully-charged NiMH battery into the ESC.
3. Press and hold the blue EZ-Set button on the ESC. The ESC light will turn on green, then turn red. Let go immediately when the light turns red.
4. The light on the ESC should flash red once, then shut off. At this point, pull and hold the transmitter trigger to full throttle.
5. The light on the ESC should flash red twice. At this point, push and hold the transmitter trigger to full reverse. DO NOT let go of full reverse.
6. The light on the ESC should turn steady or blinking green. While still holding full reverse, press and hold the EZ-Set button on the ESC.
7. The light on the ESC should turn off for 5-10 seconds, then turn steady red. You may also hear three beeps from the motor, or a descending musical tone. When this happens, release the EZ-Set button and the transmitter trigger.
8. If the ESC shows a steady red light, the procedure was a success, and your vehicle is ready to drive.
Note: A common cause of a red/green flashing LED is holding the EZ-Set button too long when turning a vehicle off. To prevent this, simply unplug the battery to turn the vehicle off, instead of holding the EZ-Set button.
Remember, never run a vehicle using a LiPo battery when the LVD is "OFF".
